I had to fight for "Gran Torino" to be considered a five-star film, but I stand by this film as an American Classic. It's the equal opposite of "Milk," another great American fiction film from last year.
Another thought — which I wish had thrown into the review — is that I like to think of this film like a modern western. It's totally "The Searchers" for 2008. Think about it. A man blinded by racial intolerance, making a life-changing journey as he must make some hard decisions.
It really was that good.
