"I'm ready for my screen-test Mr. Polanski."
This is a marvelous romance, fully aware of its own consequences. From a screenplay by super brit Nick Hornby ("High Fidelity") and some Danish lady of whom I am unaware, comes this involving and intimate coming-of-age love story. Despite this being the third 1960's melodrama that I've seen in several weeks, it's still a fresh story. Jenny (Carey Mulligan, "Public Enemies"), an intelligent 16-year-old girl seemingly set for British university, inadvertently falls for a 30-something man (Peter Sarsgaard, "Orphan"), and sees art, culture and excitement unlike she's ever seen. Pangs of Polanski, please be gone. This is a sweet and sincere love story, but not without its own self-awareness, and inevitable troubles. Besides, the early 60's really seem to have been a different world. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the lack of age issues as plot devices. There's so much more (femininity, integrity) at stake, which makes the film all the better. Kudos to Sarsgaard be exuding a likable creepiness, and Mulligan is just great as a young girl learning. And she's terribly cute. She's 24!
Do see.
