A free and easily found Cassavetes? How could it be?
Well, to be fair, "Gloria" is perhaps his most commercial if not arguably his weakest as a director. But for John Cassavetes, that's still a damn good movie. Say hello to Gloria everyone.
From John Cassavetes, a true godfather of American independent cinema, comes his 1980 effort "Gloria," starring his wife Gena Rowlands in her second Oscar-nominated role under the man. Perhaps you've heard of this? There was a 1999 remake with Sharon Stone? No? Good to hear. Gloria is an ex-mob mistress trying to protect a young boy from the men that killed his family.
Two reasons to watch this:
1. Cassavetes — even when studio neutered — makes a damn fine drama.
2. Gena Rowlands in the eponymous role make for a legendary female lead. There really aren't enough good, strong female leads out there. I mean this objectively. What kick-ass, memorable leading ladies have you seen lately? Cassavetes and Rowlands were aware of this, and that's why Rowlands always got such good roles. What a couple.
