Simple pair of questions: What's your favorite film, and what's the best film of all time?
Like invisibility vs. flight, or chocolate vs. vanilla, the favorite versus the best argument is a good one. When you grow a reputation like mine, where conversations just find a way towards filmspeak, people often ask, what's your favorite movie? Well, I feel the need to differentiate between best and favorite. Because often, one is confused for another.
Oh, so "Ghostbusters" is the best movie of all time? No, it's my favorite, because I never tire of its original spontaneity, and personal connections after 200+ viewings. So "The Third Man" is your favorite? No. I mean, I love it, and I think it's the best movie ever made because it's actually deserving of the word perfect, but it's not my favorite. Best, is a semi-objective standard of critique, picking a film that stands above others. Favorite, is well, your favorite, for whatever reasons that might be. Huuuge difference. But, either way, I love hearing how people come to these conclusions.
So with that, I ask:
- What's your favorite movie?
- What's the best movie?
- And, uh why?
Put it in the comments.

This is actually a tough one for me. Mostly because I’m not sure if I have the technical chops or viewed a library large enough to make a valid claim for “best.” The best would probably be judged by story, performance, technique, and influence, among others. And I just don’t think I’ve seen enough movies to opine on the latter two.
For favorites, I've never really been decisive enough to name one overall favorite. But, I would consider Back to the Future, Lost in Translation, Rushmore, Pulp Fiction, with The 40-year-old Virgin as an honorable mention. When I thought about it, I noticed that I didn't have any true dramas in there. I think it has to do with what I connect with. They're my favorites because I feel a connection to it in some way, and, frankly, find them entertaining as hell. I'd watch any of those multiple times in one week.
I mean, there are great movies that I love, but how often can you watch them?
