Capsules: "Toy Story 3" & "Knight and Day."

"You waiting for to 'Inception' too?"

"Toy Story 3" is probably the best mainstream movie to come out so far this summer. But quite frankly, that's not saying too much. I just think it was decent. Sorry, but unlike all the other twentysomething peers seeing this, I didn't have as strong an emotional reaction for this film. No, I am not a monster. "Toy Story 3" has the crushing burden of Pixar's supreme quality legacy working against it, and when put into the animation house's library, well ... nothing can ever come close to "Up," "The Incredibles" or "Finding Nemo." "Toy Story 3" is very good. It hits the right emotional narrative marks. Also, the jokes (specifically Don Rickles scene-stealing voice as Mr. Potato Head) are top notch. Animation's beautiful. Everything is superlative, like every other Pixar film.

Here are my two main problems: 1. It has a lot of same story and thematic beats from the last two films. We get it. Obsolescence and growing up suck. 2. It just didn't hit me on the emotional level so many seem to be getting from this. Was I expecting to shed a tear? No. Do I need to? Certainly no. But when friends are getting more worked up over this than me, well, then what the hell's the matter with me?

Eh. Still, go see it, and enjoy it. A lot. "Toy Story 3" is very good. John Lasseter must be rolling in his grave over that.

"YOU DON'T LIKE MY FUCKING MOVIE?!?!"

At least I didn't mind seeing this with Nana. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized "Knight and Day" was shitty slapdashery. 9 writers worth of plotholes + editorial assembly worthy of Doc Frankenstein = and a glossy, shaky final product. "Knight and Day" is a mild disaster where every seem was visible and ready for scrutiny. And damn it ... I really wanted to like it.

Tom Cruise? Lame. Smug and odd. NEXT!

Cameron Diaz? Weak. Tight face. NEXT!

James Mangold? The fuck bro? You make decent movies ("Identity," "3:10 to Yuma"), and now Fox had to go and ruin it? NEXT!

Nana? Well, she enjoyed this, so ... I can't complain. She liked the gunplay and bulls. Actually, I liked the bulls too. But, uh, that scene was about as long as it lasted in the trailer.

We can talk more in-depth later. For now, "Knight and Day" gets filed under "suck," "fail" and maybe "washed-up?"
