The Frugal Theater: "A New Leaf"

BASTARDS! I can't embed the thing.

Alright, listen up.

I was digging into Elaine May's history after Mike Nichols AFI Award regalia, and found that May's been a bit of secret weapon in Hollywood for the last, um, 40 years. She was the ying to Nichol's yang. She basically made Warren Beatty legitimate by writing for him. Her writing credits ("Primary Colors," "The Birdcage") are phenomenal. Even the uncredited stuff ("Tootsie," "Reds")! Plus, May was funny as hell in person, be it her comic routines with Mike Nichols, or her small stints in films like "Small Time Crooks." Hell, she even gets credit for one of the biggest film disasters ever, the now infamous "Ishtar." Ladies and gentleman, I think it's safe to say, I have a crush on Elaine May...

That's why, this week, I'm proud to present to you, one of May's few directorial efforts, "A new Leaf."
This is one of best romantic comedies YOU WILL EVER see. No joke. "A New Leaf" starring May and Walter Matthau is so odd, sincere and unique, I don't think I've ever seen such a sublime, lovely and weird relationship committed to film. He's a middle-aged trust fund baby. She's the oddball heiress botanist. Could it be love? Or something more sinister? Sorry if that sounds like the back of the box, but this film was absolutely delightful. I snooped around for clips and found the whole thing on Youtube. I couldn't stop it was so interesting. Sure, it's in 11 parts, but I assure you the quality's just fine (given that's there no official DVD release for some reason). Watch it. Love it. Talk to me about.

Here's looking at you Miss May.
